A native of the south, Dr. Dowling grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and completed his undergraduate studies at Furman University in South Carolina. He received his DVM degree from the University of Tennessee's College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014; after graduation, Dr. Dowling completed a Small Animal Rotating Internship at VCA Veterinary Care and Referral Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2015. He stayed west (sort of!) when he was accepted into the Medical Oncology Residency program at the University of Illinois. Dr. Dowling doubled down on the academics during his veterinary training and completed a concurrent Master of Science in Veterinary Clinical Medicine during his residency. Upon completion of his residency, we are happy to say that Dr. Dowling accepted a position at VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists.

Dr. Dowling was excited to come west as Portland was the ideal place to pursue both his professional and personal interests. His specific interests in the realm of veterinary oncology include diagnostic cytology, immunotherapies, and palliative care. Dr. Dowling hopes to eventually grow the clinical trial program at NWVS in the hopes that by providing investigational cancer care, VCA NWVS can not only advance veterinary oncology but can also contribute a higher level of comfort and care of the pets of Portland who are affected by cancer. On a personal note, Dr. Dowling is looking forward to pursuing his loves of bird watching, kayaking, hiking, and exploring in the beautiful PNW with his lab mix named George by his side.
