Dr. Risen grew up in Kansas City and attended Shawnee Mission West High School. She attended and received an undergraduate degree, B.S. in Agriculture, from Kansas State University. Cindy has two dogs. Scooter, a Toy Poodle and Taiwan, a pug. Both are foster dogs turned permanent residents. Cindy has four cats that she describes as living with Capuchin monkeys. They are Ping, a Siamese; Max, a black and white domestic shorthair; Sunshine, an orange tabby; and Ariel, a calico. Cindy does have two pets that do not live in her house. Cabin Fever is a quarter horse gelding and Jerry Struman is a Percheron/Thoroughbred cross gelding.

Dr. Risen enjoys volunteering for Kansas City Pet Project at the KCMO shelter. She also likes to spend time with friends and family, riding, painting, reading and watching bad television.
