What is carboxymethylcellulose polymer + propylene glycol?

Carboxymethylcellulose polymer + propylene glycol (brand name Intrasite®) is a water-based gel that helps rehydrate wound tissue and helps keep moisture balance to aid in wound healing. It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a medical device.

It is used off label (extra label) in veterinary medicine. Many drugs or treatments are commonly prescribed for off-label use in veterinary medicine. “Off label” means the drug or treatment is being used in a way that has not been reviewed or approved by the FDA or Health Canada. In these instances, follow your veterinarian’s directions and cautions carefully, as they may be significantly different from those on the label.

How do I give my pet carboxymethylcellulose polymer + propylene glycol?

  • Carboxymethylcellulose polymer + propylene glycol comes in a water-based gel form contained in application packs (Applipak®), available in different sizes.
  • Gel is applied topically, directly to the wound.
  • Follow your veterinarian’s directions for cleaning the wound before application, bandaging, and wound care.
  • Wash your hands before and after applying or wear gloves when applying this medication.
  • Avoid contact with eyes.
  • Do not let an animal lick or chew the affected sites after application.
  • Give this medication to your pet for the entire time prescribed by your veterinarian, even if it appears that your pet is feeling better.

This treatment should take effect soon after application and improvement in clinical signs should follow.

What if I miss applying the product?

If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember, and then continue with the regular dosing schedule. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not give the pet two doses at once.

It is important to watch for signs of an allergic reaction over the entire course of treatment and notify your veterinarian if you have any concerns. Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian immediately. Carboxymethylcellulose polymer + propylene glycol is easily removed by cleaning with normal saline.
