Hydrocortisone Aceponate: Topical

Krista Williams, BSc, DVM, CCRP; Kayla Hyland, BA, DVM, CHPV

What is hydrocortisone aceponate topical?

Hydrocortisone aceponate topical (brand name: Cortavance®) is a topical steroid used to treat inflammatory skin conditions and skin itchiness in dogs. It differs from hydrocortisone as it rapidly penetrates the skin and targets areas of inflammation without significant absorption to the rest of the body.

It may be used off label in cats. Many drugs are commonly prescribed for off-label use in veterinary medicine. “Off label” means the drug is being used in a way that has not been reviewed or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or Health Canada. In these instances, follow your veterinarian’s directions and cautions carefully, as they may be significantly different from those on the label.

This medication is not currently available in the United States.

  • To apply, spray about 10 cm (4 inches) away from the skin.
  • Two pumps delivers enough medication to cover a 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inch) square area.
  • Leave treated area to dry. Prevent your pet from licking or chewing the area until dry.
