What is moxidectin injectable?
Moxidectin injectable (ProHeart 6®, ProHeart 12®) is used in dogs to prevent heartworm disease and treat existing hookworm infections. It is convenient for pet owners because an injection provides protection for several months. ProHeart 6® provides 6 months of heartworm prevention, and ProHeart 12® provides 12 months of heartworm prevention.
How is moxidectin injectable given?
- Moxidectin injectable comes as an injectable medication which must be given by your veterinarian or a trained veterinary staff member.
- ProHeart 6® is given every 6 months and ProHeart 12® is given every 12 months.
This medication should start having effects within 1 to 2 days; however, you may not see the effects of this medication outwardly.
What if I miss giving my pet the medication?
If you miss an application, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible to schedule the next dose. Additional testing may be needed to ensure that a heartworm infection did not occur if there was a gap in coverage.
