Bringing home a new pet checklist
Congratulations on deciding to bring home a new pet! Whether they’re a mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian or even a fish, we’re here to help you welcome the new arrival. Use our handy preparatory checklist to make sure your new pet feels right at home.
Research care. Every pet species has unique needs. Even different breeds of dogs and cats can have special needs! Read up on your new pet at the VCA Know Your Pet article hub to be all set for your new pet the moment they step through your door.
Buy (or budget for) the basics. Now that you know all about your new pet, it’s time to go shopping! For those items best purchased after your new buddy arrives, set aside some spending cash instead. Essentials to consider based on the species of your pet include:
Pet-proof your house. If your pet will be allowed free reign in your home, it’s time to put away anything that could be chewed or swallowed. Get rid of any toxic plants, and make sure medications and chemicals are well out of reach. Pet birds are also extremely sensitive to aerosols—some of which can be deadly!—so bird owners should unplug all diffusers.
Prep your pet. Hoping your pet will buddy up to the new addition? A positive introduction is key to starting their relationship on the right foot. However, be sure your pet is up to date on their vaccines before making those introductions (hint: easily check your pet’s vaccine status on the myVCA app).
Find a veterinarian. If your new pet is also a new species for you, call your veterinary hospital to find out which types of pets they can treat. If your new addition is not part of their repertoire, use our VCA hospital locator to find another VCA veterinarian near you who can treat your new pet.
