Easy toys to make for your cat with household items

easy diy cat toys

Playing with your cat enriches their life by stimulating their mind and providing them with exercise! Cats are hunters by nature, and you can mimic some of their natural behaviors with pet-safe toys you create with supplies found around your home. Even if you’re not “crafty,” many of these toys are easy to make without the need for special equipment—or skills!

  2. Use an empty paper towel roll for an even bigger toy.

T-shirt bows

Materials

  • Old jersey cotton T-shirts
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Catnip (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut apart each shirt along the side seams.
  2. Cut the fabric into 3" x 10" rectangles.
  3. Make a pile of six strips, alternating colors.
  4. Slightly stretch each strip so they each roll up onto themselves.
  5. If using catnip, place some in the center of the top strip.
  6. Tie the pile into a knot and pull the ends tightly.
  7. Trim the ends to even them up and presto!
  8. Start tossing those bows for your cat to chase!

Cat house

Materials

  • Cardboard box
  • Scissors
  • Construction paper
  • Markers

Instructions

  1. After a long day of playing with all their new toys, your cat will probably want a cozy place to hang out!
  2. Take a box and cut a hole in it for your cat to use as a doorway and then place their favorite blanket inside.
  3. If you really want to jazz it up, remodel the box into a cat house by using construction paper and markers to decorate it as you please.
