While working from home offers the comfort of your own space, it also comes with a few challenges—particularly when your pet thinks your workday is their playtime. Dogs like to add their two cents—or rather two woofs—during virtual meetings and cats can be keyboard kings, strutting across the keyboard, gracefully erasing files and firing off unfinished emails!
Keeping your pet entertained and happy while you focus on work can be a balancing act, but with a few creative strategies, you can ensure that both you and your pet enjoy your work-from-home days.
Window watching. For pets who love to watch the world go by, a window can be a great source of entertainment. Set up a cozy spot by a window where your pet can observe birds, squirrels and passersby. This “window TV” can keep them occupied for hours.
Interactive toys and puzzles. Interactive toys are a fantastic way to engage your pet’s mind and keep them busy. For dogs, treat-dispensing toys like KONGs or puzzle feeders provide both mental stimulation and a tasty reward. Simply stuff the toy with your pet’s favorite treats or food, and they’ll be entertained as they work to get the goodies out—letting you focus on work!
Long-lasting chews and pupsicles. If you have a dog who loves to chew, dental chews or other edible dog chews can keep them occupied for extended periods. Another option is to create “pupsicles”—frozen treats made from dog-safe ingredients like peanut butter, chicken broth or fruit. These provide a tasty snack and take some time to consume, giving you a longer stretch of uninterrupted work time.
Regular walks and play breaks. Is your dog bored while working from home? Sometimes we don't notice the time pass when we’re deep into a project. Incorporating play breaks and walks into your routine is essential for both you and your pet! Take your dog for a quick walk around the block or play a game of hide of seek indoors between meetings.
Cat TV. Search for videos on YouTube specifically designed for feline viewers. Featuring birds, fish or small mammals, these videos are a great way to keep your cat entertained, especially during long meetings.
Puzzle games. Just like their dog “coworkers,” cats benefit from puzzle games that challenge them to solve problems in exchange for treats. These toys tap into your pet’s natural instincts to forage and hunt, making puzzle time both fun and fulfilling.
Cat trees and safe spaces. Cats love to climb and scratch, so investing in a cat tree or scratching post can be a game changer. These structures provide a space for your cat to release energy, stretch and sharpen their claws. If you have the space, consider setting up a “catio” (cat patio) or a safe, designated area with toys and comfortable bedding where your cat can relax without interrupting your work.
With the right strategies, working from home with your pet can be a harmonious experience. Plus, those occasional play breaks aren’t just good for your pet—they’re good for you, too! So go ahead, take a moment to toss a toy or snuggle up; your productivity (and your pet) will thank you.
