March 17 is Saint Patrick’s Day—a time for celebration, good food and fun with family and friends! While you’re enjoying the festivities, it’s important to keep your cat safe from potential hazards. From festive foods to decorations, here’s how to give your cat the luck of the Irish without any risks. In this article, we’ll explore what happens if a cat drinks beer, whether shamrock plants are safe for cats, and how to give your pet the luck of the Irish without any risks!

Food Safety

Can cats drink beer?

No. Dyed green or not, beer and all other alcoholic beverages are toxic to cats, even in small amounts. Alcohol can cause signs such as vomiting, disorientation and more severe signs. Cats are curious, so spilled drinks or unattended glasses can pose a real danger.

Steps to take:

  1. Immediately clean up spills and keep drinks out of reach.
  2. Confine your cat to a safe, quiet room during parties, especially if guests are likely to leave drinks unattended.
  3. If your cat drinks beer or other alcohol, contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (1-888-426-4435) right away.

Is Irish stew safe to share?

This hearty Saint Patrick’s Day staple may be a delectable meal for you, but it isn’t safe for your cat. Ingredients like onions and garlic are toxic to cats, and the rich gravy and fatty beef can cause gastrointestinal upset, including pancreatitis, a painful and dangerous condition.

Safe treat idea: Give your cat a small “green” snack plate with chopped green beans, broccoli or lettuce for a festive on-theme treat!

Decoration Safety

Are shamrock plants safe for cats?

Shamrocks may be a symbol of Irish luck, but they are poisonous to pets. Shamrocks contain calcium oxalates, which can cause drooling, vomiting and gastrointestinal upset if ingested. Ingesting large amounts can lead to more serious complications. To keep your cat safe, place shamrocks out of your cat’s reach or opt for artificial shamrocks.

Holiday decorations.

When decking out your space with Saint Patrick’s Day charm, opt for pet-safe decorations. Avoid items that can be chewed, swallowed or pose choking hazards.

Decorate safely by doing the following:

  • Avoid hanging decorations that dangle, as they may tempt your cat to swat or chew on them.
  • Secure all decorations to prevent your cat from knocking them over.
  • Keep small items, like beads or coins, out of reach to prevent choking.

With a bit of planning and attention, you can enjoy a festive and safe Saint Patrick’s Day with your feline companion.
