True or False: Dogs tend to gain weight in the winter

Answer: True

As the rain, snow and cold weather sets in, we may tend to “hibernate” and cozy up by the fire with a hot cup of coffee or cocoa. Unfortunately, when your activity levels drop due to frightful winter weather, so too does your dog’s. Without a corresponding change in their daily caloric intake, your dog is at risk of gaining extra weight. While exercise plays an important role in maintaining your pet’s weight, their food intake is also a factor.

Tips to maintain your pet’s weight over the winter:

  • Measure out or weigh how much you’re feeding your dog.
  • Slightly decrease the amount of food fed during the winter months (check with your veterinarian for advice).
  • Regularly weigh your pet to monitor changes in their weight.
  • Reduce treats and snacks or provide low-calorie treats instead (e.g., green beans, broccoli and cauliflower).
  • Get your dog active indoors with:
    a DIY obstacle course;
    a scavenger hunt with your dog’s favorite toys;
    training sessions of new commands/tricks, or go back to the basics for a refresher;
    an interactive feeder to keep your dog moving and engaged.

These tips will help keep your pet in tip-top shape, reduce their risk of obesity and keep you both entertained on the long, cold days of winter!
