True or False? Pet microchips locate your pet through GPS.

t-f pet microchips

Answer: False

While pet microchips can help reunite you with your pet, they can’t be used to track them via GPS. A microchip is a small radio-frequency identification device (about the size of a grain of rice) that’s inserted under your pet’s skin. Microchip registration is an essential step in the microchipping process. It pairs your contact information with the unique microchip ID number in an online database. The microchip doesn’t contain any of your personal information.

If your pet escapes and is taken to a veterinary hospital or shelter, staff will scan your pet, look in the database for your pet’s ID number and be provided with your contact details. Be sure to keep your information up to date in the database!

Not sure if your pet is microchipped? Ask your veterinarian if they can scan them during your next appointment.
