True or False? Treats should make up to 10% of your pet’s calories
It’s true, but with a twist! Treats should not exceed 10% of your pet’s energy/calorie intake. So targeting 5% is a safer bet.
Why should we avoid giving pets too many treats?
Feeding your pet too many treats can lead to unwanted behaviors and health problems.
- Nutritional imbalances: Treats are not complete and balanced foods, and could have far more protein or fats than your pet can tolerate or is healthy for them.
- Reduced appetite for regular food: Treats can become more appealing than regular food, turning your pet into a fussy eater, and potentially lead to nutritional imbalances.
- Stomach upset: Too much of a delicious treat could cause diarrhea or vomiting.
- Unhealthy weight gain: Overweight and obese pets are at increased risk of diabetes, pancreatitis and joint disease.
Ask your veterinarian for recommendations about the type and number of treats to give your pet.
