Regular brushing helps keep your pet’s skin and coat clean and healthy. It removes loose hair and dead skin cells, keeps your pet’s coat free of dirt, debris and external parasites, and distributes natural skin oils along the hair shafts. Plus, it feels good!

Different styles of brushes work better on certain types of coats.

  • Combs or stiff bristle brushes help remove loose hair from dogs and cats with medium-length hair or sparse undercoats.
  • Long-tooth metal combs or brushes, especially ones with rows of offset tines, are useful to remove loose hair and minor tangles in dogs and cats with long hair, such as collies or Ragdoll cats.
  • Slicker brushes work well for dogs such as poodles, with curly, non-shedding coats.
  • Brushes with short bristles or a flexible grooming gloves are good for smooth-coated dogs, such as pointers and boxers.
  • De-shedding brushes help remove the dead, loose undercoat without causing harm to the top coat.

Pets with long, silky or curly coats require daily brushing to keep their fur from becoming tangled or matted, especially around the ears, in the armpits or along the back of the legs. Dogs with short hair coats require less frequent brushing.

If your pet is in the middle of a big shed, daily brushing will also dramatically reduce the amount of loose hair and pet dander floating around your home. Plus, it can also cut down on the amount of hair that your pet swallows in the course of self-grooming.
