Easy, smart precautions can save your pet’s life
Our pets can be mischievous creatures, getting into things we didn’t imagine they would. Although most of these naughty mishaps will lead to nothing more than a little cleanup nuisance or slight tummy upset, it only takes one wrong mouthful for our pets to experience serious harm.
So let’s stay two steps ahead of our curious companions! Follow these simple poison prevention measures to make sure nothing harmful is ever within reach of mouth or paw:
- Keep all medications (both human and pet) up high in closed cupboards.
- Label all pet medications well and communicate with other family members to prevent overdosing or double-dosing.
- Never give your pet medications meant for humans or a different animal species without consulting your veterinarian first.
- Don't store food on counters or tables. Keep it tucked away in drawers, cupboards or pantries.
- Don't give your pet table food, since a lot of human foods can be dangerous for animals.
- If you keep gum or mints in your purse or pant pockets, don't leave these items on the floor; keep them out of reach.
- Never bring lilies into cat households! These are so toxic to cats that even their pollen can be poisonous. Be sure to double check all bouquets you receive.
- Check the dog and cat versions of the ASPCA toxic plant list before buying a new houseplant.
- Lock all cleaning, automotive and garden chemicals securely away.
- Never use mouse or rat poison in the house¬—pets have a way of sniffing these out, no matter where they are hidden!
- Don't leave decorative dishes of potpourri or essential oils around the house—your pet may think it is a nice little water dish to drink from.
- Get a trash can that pets will not be able to open or get into. If your pet is crafty enough to open any trash container, store the trash under the sink in a closed cabinet. And don't forget bathroom trash bins!
If you are worried that your pet has eaten something toxic, take them to your veterinary hospital or the nearest VCA emergency hospital immediately.
