Get to know the temperament origins of the five most “paw”-pular dog breeds

No other dog is quite like your dog. Your dog is unique, their singular personality shaped by their past experiences, social interactions and, most importantly, by you—the special relationship you two share plays a big part in making your dog who they are.

Genetics also greatly influences your dog’s personality. Before dogs became our pampered pets, they were originally bred for various jobs and purposes, which required them to have specific likes and dislikes, skills and character traits. This means that even though your dog is your special buddy, they will still share some characteristics with dogs of the same breed.

Take a look at the connection between breeding and temperament for the top five most popular dog breeds in the United States.

Labrador retriever: Labrador retrievers were bred to dive to retrieve ducks and even fish. Needless to say, they love water sports and have boundless energy. They are intelligent, obedient dogs who enjoy learning tricks and live to please. Add to that their gentle and sometimes goofy nature, and it is easy to understand why Labrador retrievers are such popular family dogs.

Chihuahua: Chihuahuas are an ancient breed, tracing their lineage to the Aztecs and Toltecs. Don’t let their small size fool you—this charismatic breed packs a big personality. They are confident, spunky and opinionated, ready to take charge of any situation. Chihuahuas are loyal to a fault, loving their family exclusively and protecting them fervently.

Shih tzu: Shih tzus behave like royalty for good reason; these outgoing dogs were first bred for a life of luxury as the Chinese imperial family’s exclusive breed. As such, indoor life suits them quite well, and they prefer playtime over heavy exercise. They are sweet, sociable dogs who love attention, even from children. Shih tzus will cleverly use their abundant cute looks and charm to get the pampering they desire.

German shepherd: As their name implies, German shepherds were first bred in Germany to herd sheep, but their intelligence and courage has since made them the poster child for military and police work. German shepherds can be aloof to new people, but once they forge a friendship, they will be fiercely loyal and protective. German shepherds are active dogs that thrive when given plenty of exercise and structure.

Golden retriever: Golden retrievers were first bred as a gundog in the rainy, hilly terrain of Scotland, so lots of energy and a love of water were required. However, golden retrievers are best known for their friendly, happy demeanor that make them instant favorites. They are faithful, trustworthy dogs, whose intelligence and eager-to-please personality make them easily trainable.
