Going beyond meds for arthritis in pets

If your pet is showing signs that their arthritis is acting up, then it may be time to tweak their treatment plan, and lucky for you and your pet, you’re not limited to simply adjusting medications—there’s a whole host of pain-control options that can make your fluffy friend feel better!

Talk to your veterinarian to find out which of these non-medication methods for easing arthritic joints may be right for your pet:

  • Losing extra weight. Although easier said than done, lightening up the load that your pet’s joints have to carry from day to day is one of the most effective ways to reduce arthritic pain.
  • Regular exercise. Don’t let joints stiffen up with too much lying around! Gentle exercise, like walking or calm play, several times per week will keep your pet limber and strong. However, be sure to avoid intense or infrequent exercise, since this will only stress your pet’s unconditioned joints.
  • Joint supplements. Fish oil, glucosamine and chondroitin are some of the supplements that can reduce inflammation and promote healthy cushioning in your pet’s joints. Bonus: Some supplements even come as yummy treats!
  • Medical massage. Who doesn’t like a nice, relaxing massage? A licensed veterinary massage therapist can help loosen tight muscles and possibly improve range of motion. They may even share some techniques for you to do at home.
  • Acupuncture. By triggering special points with very fine needles, veterinary acupuncturists can increase blood flow while reducing pain and inflammation. And don’t worry, most pets are totally relaxed with the needles in place.
  • Therapeutic laser therapy. Also known as “cold laser,” this pain-control modality uses light energy to stimulate healing and pain relief. Plus, your pet gets to wear some awesome goggles throughout.
  • Hydrotherapy. Water aerobics, anyone? Whether it’s in a pool or on an underwater treadmill, the buoyancy provided by water gives your pet a chance to exercise without stressing their poor, achy joints.
  • Environmental modifications. Never underestimate the power of some simple home redecoration! Changes like elevated bowls and non-slip flooring for dogs, and litterboxes on every level of the house and ramps to choice perching spots for cats, can make a world of difference.
