How well do you know your cat?

Cats are mysterious creatures, and there’s a lot we don’t know about them. But learning more about your feline friend can help strengthen your bond. Did you know these five little-known facts about cats?

Cats aren’t always aloof. Does your cat run for the hills when guests arrive? We often think of this as typical cat behavior, but it’s often a sign of poor socialization during kittenhood. Kittens that are exposed to a variety of different people, environments and stimuli with positive reinforcement often learn to be friendly and outgoing adults!

Losing whiskers won’t kill your cat. There’s a common misconception that cutting a cat’s whiskers will kill it or cause it to be off-balance and disoriented. Cats do use their whiskers as a sensory tool, but they won’t suffer any adverse effects from losing them. While we don’t recommend cutting your cat’s whiskers intentionally, some cats will lose their whiskers due to injury, and some breeds may be born without them—all of them do just fine!

Cats don’t have nine lives and don’t always land on their feet! Cats often baffle veterinarians with their uncanny ability to survive and recover from serious illnesses and injuries. But cats are still susceptible to many diseases and accidents. Good preventive care, including keeping your cat indoors and regular veterinary visits, will ensure your cat lives their one life to the fullest!

Milk may not be the best choice. The quintessential picture of a cat lapping a saucer of milk isn’t the most accurate. Many cats love milk, but adult cats lack the enzyme to digest the sugar in milk just like lactose-intolerant humans. Some cats may develop diarrhea or other GI symptoms after consuming dairy products. Even if your cat tolerates milk well, these products have a lot of extra fat and calories, so they should only be given in moderation.

Cats still need attention and care. Cats are often touted as a low maintenance pet—just make sure they have food, water and a litter box and they’ll take care of themselves. But the truth is that cats crave attention and mental stimulation just as much as dogs do! Make sure your cat is getting plenty of environmental enrichment to stay healthy and happy!
