Is socializing your puppy possible while social distancing?
These days, we have figured out how to work, learn and stay connected all while keeping our distance, but how does puppy socialization fit into this new reality of social distancing? With puppy classes off the table, here are some creative ideas to ensure that your puppy grows up without fears of people, pets and the world around them.
To banish future anxiety of other dogs, consider scheduling socially distanced outdoor play dates with nice dogs owned by family or friends. The dogs can be allowed to play together so your puppy can learn valuable social skills; meanwhile, you and the other owner can safely stay six feet apart and wear masks.
The key to keep in mind when planning your puppy’s socialization is that quality matters more than quantity. Organizing a few really positive experiences with friendly, gentle dogs will boost your puppy’s confidence much more than a slew of mediocre experiences with poorly mannered dogs. In other words, heading to a place like the dog park is not a good idea and may even be counterproductive if your puppy ends up having a bad experience.
Finding ways to socialize your puppy with other people may be more challenging. You can ask friends and neighbors to toss your dog treats from a distance. Make sure to chat and laugh with your human helper throughout so your puppy takes your cue and remains at ease. Another option would be to window watch from your house or car and give your puppy treats and praise as people walk by.
Remember that well-rounded socialization goes beyond meeting people and pets. Puppies should be introduced to a wide variety of new situations and sensations, like loud sounds, different surfaces, bathing and riding in the car. Every positive new experience your puppy has boosts their overall confidence, which will help them handle any unfamiliar situation in their future.
Lastly, don’t forget that a well-socialized puppy should be comfortable to spend time alone. If your puppy is used to being by your side 24/7, they can easily develop separation anxiety. Plan some time every day for your puppy to spend alone in their crate, with plenty of toys and treats to make crate time enjoyable.
Be prepared for your puppy’s socialization sessions with healthy, veterinarian-approved treats.
