Learn to read your pet’s eyes

learn to read your dog's eyes

If eyes are the windows to the soul, think of how much you could learn about your pet’s thoughts and feelings simply by watching their eyes! Their eyes are especially expressive since our four-legged friends rely on body language to talk with each other.

As talkative humans, we have to learn how to interpret this silent body language. This quick guide can set you on the path to finding the meaning behind your pet’s looks.

Wide eyes, dilated pupils, perked ears. Your pet is happy, excited and attentive. They are probably trying to play with you or maybe beg a treat out of your hand.

Relaxed droopy eyelids with slow blinks. This squinty look is the equivalent of a smile. It may even be accompanied by a relaxed mouth that looks just like one of our smiles.

Lots of white showing. This fearful look is known as whale eye. Scared pets will open their eyes really wide and look at you out of the side of their eyes, showing off a rim of white. Whatever you’re doing, stop and give your pet a break to calm down.

Lowered eyelids, lowered head, peeking up at you. Your pet is sad, apologetic or submissive. Banish that look with some loving reassurance.

Hard, unblinking stare. This is an aggressive challenge. Approach with caution, if at all.
