Supplements can help boost your pet's health in many different ways

If you are looking for a simple and natural way to boost your pet's health, you should consider dietary supplements. Although they may come in pills that look like medications, supplements are actually just nutritional components of your pet's diet, such as vitamins and minerals, that can help your pet's body work more efficiently.

Supplements support specific body systems in many different ways:

  • Skin & Coat: Omega-3 fatty acids, such as found in fish oils, are hardworking nutrients that help improve dry skin and reduce inflammation caused by many diseases, such as allergies and osteoarthritis.
  • Bone & Joint: Glucosamine, chondroitin and avocado/soybean unsaponifiables all support cartilage health, keeping joints more comfortable.
  • Heart: Taurine is an important supplement that is necessary for healthy heart function in cats. Most commercial cat foods are supplemented with this essential nutrient, but if your cat is eating a diet that is primarily home cooked or a commercial diet that has not been approved by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), you should consider supplementing your cat's diet with taurine.
  • GIProbiotics and prebiotics help your pet build a healthy population of gut bacteria that will support optimal GI function.
  • Liver: S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and silybin may be a mouthful to say, but both of these help protect and support your pet's liver function. Many of the brands that contain these supplements require a prescription, so be sure to check with your veterinarian before ordering.
  • Brain: Certain antioxidants can slow the natural deterioration that happens in pet brains with age, helping senior pets stay sharper, longer.
  • Behavior: Several different supplements, such as L-theanine and L-tryptophan, have calming effects that are beneficial for anxious pets.

But remember, your pet can get too much of a good thing. So be sure to follow package instructions when administering supplements.
