At VCA Animal Medical Center of NE Alabama, our team is made up of a diverse group of veterinarians and support staff professionals who bring their love for animals to work with them everyday. Dr. Tom Nelson attended Texas A&M for undergraduate studies and veterinary school graduating in 1979 with honors. He started his professional career in Beaumont, Texas were he owned a successful small animal practice for 20 years. Dr. Nelson's special interest areas include orthopedic surgeries, oncology, critical care, and exotics. Dr. Nelson is considered a pioneer for his clinical work in the study of heartworm disease in cats. Darlene came to AMC in 1989 and AMC is now "family" for her. She enjoys all of the different aspects of medicine and surgery that can be done here, especially surgery and oncology. Darlene and husband Kevin have two children: Jared and Kayla and dogs Chuck, Nikki, Baby, Scout, and Dexter and cats Rick James, Yeti, Rusty, Libby, Cole, KitKat, and Girlfriend. An accomplished softball player in high school, Darlene now enjoys watching that sport plus football and many others.
