kitten vomiting

Cats have a reputation for vomiting often. But this reputation is poorly deserved, and a truly healthy cat should not be vomiting regularly!

If your kitten vomits, be sure to pay attention because something likely set them off. There are many potential reasons why a cat may vomit, and they range from not a big deal to very serious. The most common reasons a kitten might vomit include:

  • Hairballs
  • Sudden food changes
  • Table food
  • Food allergy or sensitivity
  • Intestinal parasites
  • Toxicities (e.g., lilies, household cleaners, essential oils, etc.)
  • Foreign body (meaning that your cat has swallowed an inedible item. String is the most dangerous and common type of foreign body kittens swallow)
  • Infections

So, how do you know if your kitten’s vomiting is serious or just a one-time thing?

If your kitten vomits only once and then returns to their usual high-energy self, is drinking water normally and eager to eat their next meal, then it’s likely not serious. Double-check that your kitten’s food didn't get switched by accident, that the food is still fresh and not expired, and that your kitten wasn't given table food that didn't agree with their stomach.

However, if your kitten is showing any of the following signs, they need to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible:

  • Vomiting more than once
  • Vomit with something other than stomach bile, digested food or a hairball in it (for example, blood, pieces of string or plant leaves)
  • Dry heaving (trying to vomit and bringing nothing up)
  • Can't keep water down
  • Refusing food
  • Acting lethargic and lacking energy
  • Having diarrhea
  • You've noticed anything else that is off about your kitten, like weight loss or change in drinking or peeing habits
