10 signs besides itching that your pet may have allergies

Spring is coming, and with it comes sunshine, flowers and…allergies. That means intense itching day and night for many an allergic pet—but not all. Some pets show their itchiness in more subtle ways than all-out scratching, and others aren’t itchy at all, experiencing symptoms completely unrelated to the skin.

Seasonal allergies can appear as any one of these non-scratching symptoms:

  • Grooming excessively, potentially leading to more hairballs in cats
  • Licking their paws or chewing their nails often, typically causing a reddish-brown lick staining to appear between the toes
  • Scooting or licking their rear end often
  • Hair loss
  • Skin sores or scabs
  • Red ears, head shaking or recurrent ear infections
  • Red, watery or goopy eyes
  • Sneezing or runny nose
  • Snoring
  • Coughing or wheezing

If you notice any of these problems pop up in your pet this spring, be sure to discuss them with your veterinarian. Each of these symptoms can be caused by many different conditions, so your veterinarian will likely need to run some tests to check for other potential causes first.

Depending on your pet’s particular symptoms, making them feel better may require some combination of shampoos, conditioners, oral medications, eye drops or ear ointment. No matter what your pet needs, you can find it here!
