Wellness checklist for pets
With everyone’s schedules changing, it’s easy to fall out of your routine and let a few things fall through the cracks. These daily, monthly and yearly tasks are super important for your pet’s health! Make sure you’re staying on top of your pet's care with our handy checklist.
Daily Tasks
- Get some exercise! Most pets don’t get enough exercise and mental stimulation. Set aside some extra time during the day for walks, training and active playtime to keep your pet feeling their best. Your pet will love spending more time with you!
- Brush those pearly whites. Your pet’s dental hygiene is an essential factor in their overall health. Try to brush their teeth daily using a pet-specific toothpaste to remove plaque, maintain healthy gums and keep breath fresh. If they won’t tolerate daily brushing, try to work up to brushing at least a few times per week.
- Keep it clean. Cleaning up the yard or litter box daily is one of the best ways to prevent parasites and other hygiene issues. When using cleaners and disinfectants around your home, make sure you choose products that are safe for your pets.
Monthly Tasks
- Don’t forget your monthly preventives! Fleas, ticks and heartworms, oh my! Parasites can cause a lot of nasty problems for your pet. Your pet needs parasite prevention year-round, so mark the date to be sure you won’t forget the next dose. Your veterinarian can help you choose the best preventive products to keep your pet protected.
- Keep them looking fresh. Regular grooming will help keep your pet’s coat clean and free of mats. This is also a great time to check your pet’s nails and see if they’re due for a trim! Some pets will need more frequent grooming, particularly those with longer or thicker coats, so keep a close eye on your pet throughout the month.
Yearly Tasks
- Make a date with your veterinarian. Even healthy pets need to see the veterinarian at least once a year. Annual physical exams and regular screening tests can detect potential problems early so you can keep your pet healthy. Don’t forget to update your pet’s vaccinations, if needed—they’re your best defense against the common infectious diseases your pet may face!
- Check your pet’s microchip! Microchips help thousands of lost pets return safely home to their owners every year. Make sure all of your pets are microchipped and check the registry annually to ensure your contact information is correct and up-to-date.
