Hello, my name is Jamaya and I’m currently a Kennel Attendant here at VCA. Ever since I was a child my heart has always belonged to dogs. When I was in elementary school I would always tell my mom that one day I would become a vet. Working with animals has always been a dream of mine which is why I am so fortunate to be working at VCA.
In 2011 my family and I moved down to South Florida from New Jersey. Within the first year of being here my parents bought a new ferret to join the rest of the ferrets but this one was different. She came from a family that had got her for their child who quickly became bored with her and neglected her. When she arrived she was balding and very aggressive and afraid but overtime she had gotten used to us. One day I had noticed that something about her was wrong and I soon discovered that she had adrenal gland disease. For a while she was getting her monthly shot, she was beginning to get her fur back and became more active and loving. Unfortunately, there was a point where we weren’t able to take her to her appointments do to car troubles and money but I did everything that I could to make sure that she would be okay. I would look up home remedies for her and I found out that giving her drops of melatonin would help her. Overtime the melatonin stopped working and she became sick again but this time I was worse. In August of 2015 I had to make the hardest decision of my life which was to euthanize her. From that day I made a promise to myself that I will always go above and beyond to take care of an animal and give them all the love that I could possibly give them.
I currently have two cats named Wu-Tang and Maxine who we took in after seeing them living in our backyard. I have a ferret named Bandit who was found by a friend of my mine who says that his previous caretakers had left him in the trunk of their car. Three dogs named Jack, Blue and Lila. Lastly, I have a beta fish named Benard. These animals are my world and I would do absolutely anything for them.
