Advanced Care

Orthopedic Surgery

Fractured bones and torn ligaments are among the most common injuries treated by veterinary surgeons. These conditions often result from trauma and may involve multiple injuries. At VCA Peone Pines Animal Hospital, we offer a comprehensive range of orthopedic surgery services to help pets in Spokane, Mead, Chattaroy, Colbert, Deer Park, Elk, and the surrounding areas recover and enjoy pain-free, active lives.

Fractured Bones

If your pet suffers a fractured bone, our team provides digital radiographs and applies splints to support healing. For advanced procedures such as fracture plating or pinning, we collaborate with a trusted network of local VCA hospitals and specialty hospitals specializing in orthopedic surgery. In some cases, amputation may be the best option to improve quality of life, in which case amputation can be performed by our veterinarians.

Knee Ligament Injuries

For pets experiencing knee ligament injuries, after an orthopedic assessment and radiographs, we may recommend surgical procedures to stabilize the knee joint, including:

  • TTA (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement)  Performed in-house by Dr. Chad Pilgeram, this procedure stabilizes the knee by altering the forces acting on the joint, promoting improved mobility.
  • Extracapsular Repair  Also offered in-house by Dr. Pilgeram, this technique is ideal for smaller dogs or pets with less severe ligament damage.
  • TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy)  For some cases, we refer pets to specialized orthopedic surgeons in the area for this advanced procedure.
  • For dislocated kneecaps (patellar luxation)  Surgery may be recommended and performed by Dr Pilgeram to reduce pain and restore mobility.

Comprehensive Pain Management

We prioritize your pet’s comfort from the time of injury through recovery process with personalized pain management strategies, including:

  • Multimodal Pain Management  We combine anti-inflammatory medications, analgesics, oral supplements and, when appropriate, laser therapy to reduce pain and inflammation effectively.
  • Nerve Blocks with Nocita  Nocita is applied at the surgical site, providing up to 72 hours of post-operative pain relief.
  • Individualized Recovery Plans  Tailored to your pet’s specific needs, our recovery plans promote healing and improved comfort.
  • Ongoing Monitoring and Support  We provide follow-up appointments to monitor healing progress and adjust pain management strategies as needed.

At VCA Peone Pines, we prioritize education and transparency regarding your pet’s treatment options. If your pet requires referral to a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, we will guide you through the process and provide ongoing post-operative support at our hospital. Our goal is to help your pet recover fully, no matter where the surgery takes place.
