Advanced Care

Ultrasound

At VCA Peone Pines Animal Hospital, we offer advanced veterinary ultrasound services to pet owners in Mead, WA, Spokane, and surrounding areas. Ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless imaging tool that allows our veterinarians to examine your pet’s internal organs in real time, aiding in the diagnosis and monitoring of various medical conditions.

GFAST (Global Ultrasounds): Ultrasounds for Trauma and Emergency Cases

Dr. Sinclair and Dr. Pyrdek have specialized training in performing GFAST ultrasounds, an advanced diagnostic tool for internal medicine, trauma and emergency cases. This rapid ultrasound technique helps assess internal injuries, fluid accumulation, and other critical conditions, ensuring quick and effective treatment.

When is an Ultrasound Recommended for Your Pet?

Ultrasound is helpful for diagnosing a variety of issues, including:

  • Abdominal concerns – Detecting issues with the liver, kidneys, spleen, intestines, and bladder.
  • Heart conditions – Assessing heart function, especially when murmurs are present.
  • Pregnancy confirmation – Monitoring fetal health and confirming pregnancies.
  • Tumor detection – Identifying masses or abnormal growths.
  • Fluid accumulation – Checking for excess fluid in the chest or abdomen.
  • Cystocentesis urine collection – Provides a sterile urine sample in addition to evaluation of the bladder for masses, urinary crystals or urinary stones.

If your pet is showing unexplained symptoms, our veterinarians may recommend an ultrasound to get a clearer picture of their health.

How to Prepare Your Pet for an Ultrasound

Preparation may vary based on the type of ultrasound, but general guidelines include:

  • Fasting – Pets ideally should not eat for 8-12 hours prior to the ultrasound. Your pet’s specific recommendation for fasting will be discussed prior to the procedure being performed.
  • Full bladder – For bladder and urinary tract evaluations, we may ask you to avoid letting your pet urinate before the appointment.
  • Minimal stress – Our Fear Free Certified team ensures your pet remains calm and comfortable throughout the procedure.

What to Expect During the Ultrasound

The process is designed to be as stress-free as possible for your pet:

  1. Gentle restraint – Pets are comfortably positioned, usually on their side or back.
  2. Shaving the area – A small patch of fur may be shaved for clear imaging.
  3. Applying alcohol or gel – Alcohol or a water-based gel is used to improve sound wave transmission. They may be moist after their ultrasound.
  4. Imaging process – The ultrasound probe is moved over the area to capture detailed images.
  5. Results and next steps – We will discuss the findings with you and determine the next steps, such as further diagnostics or treatment options.

Mobile Ultrasonographer Specialist – Dr. Sammy Ramirez

In addition to our in-house capabilities, we have a mobile Board certified ultrasonographer, Dr. Sammy Ramirez, who performs ultrasounds and collects fine needle aspirates for any suspicious findings.
