Eco-friendly swaps to make in your routine
We’re all trying to contribute in one way or another to the sustainability of our environment.
Did you know that there are sustainable choices that you can make when it comes to your pet? Pet companies are always looking for ways to support environmental sustainability. Consider making some of these eco-friendly swaps in your daily routines that can help make the planet a better place!
- Look for environmentally friendly, biodegradable bags to dispose of your pet’s waste. If you really want to step up your pet’s environmental “pawprint,” you can even use newspapers to scoop your dog’s waste and flush the waste when you get home.
- To make your cat’s waste more sustainable, try different litter materials, such as those made from corn, grass, paper, walnut shells or wood. Many of these products achieve top points in odor control, absorbency and dust control. Made from sustainably produced source materials, these litters are biodegradable and, best of all, they’re available in major pet stores and are affordable too.
- Need a new collar, harness or leash for your pet? You don’t need to settle for nylon anymore! Many brands are now making sustainable—and stylish—collars, harnesses and leashes out of bamboo, hemp and certified organic cotton. Not only are these products made from sustainable materials, once your pet is done with them, they’re biodegradable too!
- Did you know there are even some pet toys that fit the eco-friendly bill? Frisbees made out of recycled plastic blends, and durable and recycled rubber for balls make for an eco-friendly exercise outing. Cats can also use a cat scratcher made from recycled paper or bamboo!
- Washing those little dirty paw prints off your floors is a breeze! Use household cleaning concentrates that you dilute at home, which allow you to create your own ready-to-use cleanser in your own spray bottle. Or use a simple white vinegar and water solution that's inexpensive, effective, pet-safe and creates little waste.
When we make choices that are environmentally responsible for our pets, we can reduce their environmental “pawprint”—it’s healthier for the planet, our pets and us!
