You’ve probably heard the saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” but when it comes to pets, this adage couldn’t be further from the truth. While younger pups are generally more curious, dogs never stop learning, regardless of their age. You may find that senior dogs are easier to train because they’re not as active or easily distracted and can focus for longer periods of time.

For best results, choose tricks that suit older dogs, like speak, high five or household object retrieval. Some tricks can potentially hurt stiff joints, such as sitting repeatedly or jumping to grab a ball or Frisbee. If your dog has hearing loss, use visual cues such as hand signals. If their vision is impaired, use loud verbal cues and stay in their direct line of sight.

For cats, be consistent and use motivation like treats. Your pet will likely be more comfortable learning in a familiar home environment. Playing on their natural curiosity by teaching them new, basic commands to start will help ensure they stay focused. However, it’s important to keep sessions short and to always end on a positive note.

Happy training!
