Decode Your Pet’s Sleeping Positions

sleeping positions decoded

Whether it’s the way they curl up, stretch out, or put their feet in the air, we can all agree that pet sleeping positions are incredibly cute. However, our experts think they might reveal information about our pet’s needs or mood, too.

Put our theories to the test—do these interpretations match your pet’s behavior?

All Pets

The side slumber: This position, where your pet lies on their side with outstretched legs, indicates a deep, restful sleep. In dogs, this is also the most relaxed of all sleep poses—your pets are definitely feeling zen vibes!

The curl: Also known as the bagel, donut, roly-poly (or whatever cute circular thing comes to mind), this position means your pet is feeling a bit chilly and is keeping warm and cozy.

The cuddle: Our favorite position (and we suspect yours too!), your pet craves love and connection and is snuggling up to another pet, toy, or best of all—you!

Dogs

The sphinx: Who knows what the sphinx thinks? We do! When your dog is crouched on all fours and resting their head on their front legs, it means they’re full of energy and ready to play at any moment.

The superman: Your pet’s kryptonite is a nice stretch after a long day of play! Spot this adorable position when your pet lies on their belly and stretches out their legs in front and behind them.

The feet in the air: Raise the woof! While it may look like your dog is ready to party, they’re more likely trying to cool down and let off steam when lying on their back with their limbs straight up.

Cats

The belly-bared: If your cat is exposing their soft, fluffy belly to the world, congrats, you’ve got one relaxed pet! This is also a sign that your pet feels safe and comfortable around you.

The loaf: While your cat may look like a loaf when sitting upright with their paws tucked underneath them, they’re not loafing around! They’re ready to jump into action.

The pretzel: If your cat is in a position that reminds you to schedule your next yoga class, they’re feeling playful and would love a good game—as soon as naptime is over, that is!

The box: Think inside the box! If your cat’s partial to sleeping in a tight, small hideout, their wild roots are showing. Follow-up your pet’s nap with a round of stalking games.
