A day in the life: VCA veterinarian edition!
You probably already know this, but your VCA veterinarian is amazing!
In the course of a day, they’ll pull knowledge from every specialty, treating anything from goopy eyes to broken bones; they’ll field all kinds of appointments, from wellness exams to emergency surgeries; and they’ll see dogs, cats and sometimes even birds, reptiles and pocket pets, too!
Here’s a peek into what a typical day might look like for your veterinarian:
Good morning, pets! Your veterinarian’s first morning stop is to check on any patients that stayed the night. He or she will review their overnight progress, touch base with their clients and communicate a treatment regimen with the veterinary technician in charge of their care.
Off to procedures! While your veterinarian is making their morning rounds, their veterinary technicians are busy getting pets ready for anesthetic procedures. Your veterinarian will then examine the pets, check their bloodwork and create a personalized anesthetic plan for each one. Then a busy morning of procedures is ready to begin.
Spays, neuters and dental cleanings are the most common anesthetic procedures your veterinarian does, but their skills go far beyond these basics. Tumor removals, liver biopsies, wound repairs and more are all part of a day’s work.
Lunch (aka catch-up time). Lunch time isn’t just good for refueling, it’s also a great time to finish notes, return calls and check on pending diagnostic tests. So if you’ve ever answered your phone and caught your veterinarian mid-chew, now you know why!
Afternoon appointments. While the pets who had procedures are waking up from their anesthesia under the watchful eye of the veterinary technicians, your veterinarian heads to exam rooms to care for more pets needing their help. Appointments can run the gamut of possibilities, from wellness visits to sick exams to progress rechecks.
Emergencies happen. There’s no way to know when, but without a doubt, at least one urgent care or emergency appointment is bound to happen each day. Your veterinarian and their team will work extra hard to fit these pets in quickly.
Last call. Your veterinarian’s day ends with phone calls to answer client questions, consult specialists and share lab results. They’ll stop on the way out to give the overnight pets a quick cuddle, and then they’re on their way home.
You want to know the most amazing thing about your veterinarian? No matter how busy their day gets, they always stay their caring, connected self that you and your pet know and love!
