Fun and creative ways your pet can help you meet homeschooling objectives

homeschooling with pet

Do you find yourself suddenly responsible for all of your children’s homeschooling? Let your pet come to the rescue! Pets are natural sources of educational and creative inspiration and can make your homeschooling plans more entertaining to both your kids and your pet. Here are just some of many ideas you can use in your home classroom:

  • Got an aspiring Jane Goodall on your hands? You can teach the importance of scientific observation by setting your child to observe your pet’s behaviors through the day. They can practice the scientific process by keeping a field journal and developing conclusions at the end of the day.
  • Is your child interested in a future of human or veterinary medicine? Have them research and write a report about your pet’s food or medications. You may even learn something new yourself.
  • Combine creativity, empathy and writing skills by having your child write a short story from your pet’s perspective. It may be interesting to find out what your child thinks about the inner life of your pet.
  • For a more artistic and hands-on project, have your child draw a portrait of your pet. To maximize learning, you can teach your child about different art movements by having them create a series of portraits using different styles, such as pointillism, surrealism, pop art and more.

Just be certain to choose activities that respect your pet’s comfort and space. With all the family cooped up at home at the same time, your pet needs some quiet time, too.
