We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Yuwen (Esther) Chen to the VCA Woodbridge Animal Hospital family!
Originally from Shenzhen, China, Dr. Chen's love for animals and fascination with medicine led her to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences from Purdue University before graduating from the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in 2025.
Following veterinary school, Dr. Chen completed a one-year emergency medicine-focused internship at Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine in Connecticut. She has special interests in emergency medicine, urgent care, soft tissue surgery, and feline medicine. For Dr. Chen, one of the most rewarding parts of being a veterinarian is seeing a sick or uncomfortable pet start feeling like themselves again. Sending a patient home feeling better is what makes even the most challenging days worthwhile!
Dr. Chen chose to make Northern Virginia her new home because of the wonderful community and the opportunity to work alongside a fantastic veterinary team. She brings not only her medical knowledge and experience but also a compassionate, thoughtful approach to caring for pets and the people who love them.
When she's not helping patients at the hospital, Dr. Chen enjoys cooking, baking, gaming, collecting adorable animal figurines, exploring museums, catching movies on the big screen, and discovering hidden bakery gems. At home, she's kept entertained by her two cats, Toffee and Moonlight. Toffee is a tuxedo cat who considers cuddling a full-time occupation, while Moonlight is essentially a teenage boy trapped in a cat's body—independent, occasionally dramatic, and absolutely convinced he knows everything!
A few fun facts about Dr. Chen? She dreams of visiting the Galápagos Islands to see blue-footed boobies in the wild (because who can resist those adorable blue feet and funny little waddles?). She loves ketchup but isn't a fan of raw tomatoes. And if she hadn't become a veterinarian, she thinks she might have been a novelist, creating entire worlds through storytelling!
Above all, Dr. Chen values the incredible bond between people and their pets. She understands that veterinary medicine doesn't always provide simple answers, but she believes every patient deserves thoughtful, thorough, and individualized care.
In Dr. Chen's own words:
"Medicine doesn't always come with clear answers, and we may not always be able to find the exact cause of an illness or a perfect solution. What I can promise is that I will approach each patient with care and thoroughness, walk you through my findings and recommendations, and work with you to develop a plan that fits your pet's needs. My goal is to help your pet feel a little better than yesterday, one step at a time."
