Frequently Asked Questions About Kitten Nutrition

A kitten’s nutritional needs are centered around the kitten’s requirements for healthy growth. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) standards include higher minimum protein amounts, higher minimum vitamin A content and different mineral amounts when compared to adult cat maintenance diets. Your VCA care team is happy to develop a kitten feeding guide with you.

Most kitten food packaging indicates that it’s intended to be fed to cats until they’re 1 year old. Based on your kitten’s nutritional needs, your VCA care team may recommend making the switch to adult food either sooner or later than the packaging states. Large-breed cats, like Maine coons, often stay on their kitten food for longer than a year.

To select the best kitten food for your new cat, you’ll want to choose a veterinarian-recommended kitten food. The primary guideline when it comes to how to choose the right kitten food is to select one that has been approved by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) for growth or for all life stages. Your VCA care team is happy to talk to you about kitten nutritional requirements and how to choose a good kitten food.
