Dr. Martin Kwan obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2016 from the University of Melbourne in Australia. He then returned to California, where he completed a rotating internship, a specialty internship, and a residency in neurology and neurosurgery at VCA Animal Specialty Group. Before his residency, he also trained at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. During his residency, he worked alongside numerous neurologists/neurosurgeons and other specialists across the United States, including the epilepsy team at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. Dr. Kwan became board-certified in Neurology by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2024. He completed additional neurosurgical training and earned his Neurosurgery Certificate of Training in 2025.
Dr. Kwan's professional interests include the long-term management of neurological diseases such as epilepsy and inflammatory disorders. In addition to performing routine spinal surgeries, such as hemilaminectomies and ventral slots, he offers advanced neurosurgical procedures, including spinal stabilization using the most current system available in veterinary neurosurgery: the polyaxial screw fixation system. Dr. Kwan is passionate about education and takes great pride in mentoring the next generation of veterinarians and veterinary support staff while also placing a strong emphasis on client education.
Outside of work, Dr. Kwan enjoys spending time with his partner, his Portuguese Water Dog, Rottweiler, cats, and chickens. He hopes to one day expand his family to include a cow, pig, and goats. He also loves immersing himself in nature, attending theater performances, and exploring the diverse culinary offerings of Los Angeles.
