Dr. Sophie Petersen is board certified in veterinary neurology. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Reed College and then acquired a PhD in molecular neuroscience at the University of California at Berkeley. After taking some time off to travel around the world, she went to the University of California at Davis for her DVM in 2004. She completed a one-year rotating internship in small animal medicine at North Carolina State University in Raleigh before returning to UC Davis for a three year residency program in neurology/neurosurgery. Following completion of the residency she worked at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin as an Assistant Clinical Professor until 2010. She then returned to Portland and worked in a private practice as a neurologist for four years before joining VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists. Dr. Petersen has a special interest in neurosurgery and enjoys the challenge of creating diagnostic and treatment plans that best suit the needs of her clients and patients. In her free time, she and her husband love to hike and spend time outdoors around Oregon.


Veterinary Neurology is the branch of medicine that treats diseases of the nervous system: the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles in pets.
