Originally from the California Bay Area, Dr. Alexandra (Allie) Ponkey brings a rich and varied background to her veterinary career. Before becoming a veterinarian, she founded and ran two successful equestrian businesses for over 15 years - all while working her way up through every role in a veterinary hospital, from kennel assistant to practice manager. She's also worked in pharmaceutical research, human healthcare, and nonprofit community outreach.
Dr. Ponkey earned her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Western University of Health Sciences. She has a strong clinical interest in small animal surgery and emergency medicine, and plans to pursue a surgical residency in the near future. She believes the best veterinary care is rooted in empathy, collaboration, and a personalized approach to each patient and client.
Known for her warmth, resilience, and team-first mindset, Dr. Ponkey is dedicated to fostering psychologically safe spaces for both clients and colleagues. She's especially passionate about mentoring veterinary students and empowering the next generation of clinicians. Equally important to her is client education, as she believes that informed, confident pet owners are essential partners in delivering the best care, and she strives to make every interaction a collaborative, individualized experience.
Outside the hospital, you'll find her volunteering at community clinics that provide veterinary services to pets of low-income families, participating in organized veterinary medicine initiatives, exploring the mountains, or teaching friends and coworkers how to cook her favorite Italian family recipes.
